Pahlaj Nihalani is enraged by Gangubai family's opposition at Gangubai Kathiawadi
It's sad that Sanjay Leela Bhansali's films seem to get into difficulty right before their release. His Gangubai Kathiawadi has taken a similar path as well. The picture has received much too much negative attention as a result of protests and petitions. Pahlaj Nihalani, a well-known producer and former head of the censor board, has now reacted to the situation.
Some of the petitions against the film have already been dismissed by the Bombay High Court, which is good news for SLB. The family members of Gangubai Harjivandas (on whom the film is partially based) have petitioned the Supreme Court for a suspension of the film's release.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali had already been chastised by Gangubai's adopted son for allegedly defaming his mother's character. Even her granddaughter has spoken out against the director for tarnishing her grandmother's reputation. While Gangubai's family has gone to the Supreme Court, the body has proposed that the film's name be changed.
Pahlaj Nihalani has reacted to the Gangubai Kathiawadi controversy by criticising the family. "News of Gangubai being made has been hitting the rounds for about two years already," he told ETimes. And Gangubai lived in Kamathipura, which is well-known around the world. What is the source of her family's opposition now? "Had they been sleeping for so long?"
He further stated that the court should not look into the Gangubai Kathiawadi controversy because the censor board has already approved it. "After a film has been censored, last-minute petitions against it should not be heard." Once the Censor certificate is obtained, the court should not intervene or consider such applications."
"People argue that the film industry conjures up controversies," Nihalani said, while endorsing SLB. SLB, on the other hand, has made it a habit that the title of every film he makes causes debate. Both the title controversy and the tragedy with fires have followed Sanjay Leela Bhansali."
Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt, will be released on February 25, 2022.
